SCC beats Fokker/KLM by 4 wickets
Unfortunately FokkerKLM were only able to man their squad with 7 players. The summer holiday season takes its toll. Just before the match it started to rain. Both captains agreed to shorten the match to 16 overs a side and to continue playing as long as possible and the players safety was guaranteed.Fokker/KLM won the toss and elected to bat first. SCC bowlers Mukul, Agni, Agam, AK, Sanket and part time bowler Rathnakar did a good job to contain the Fokker\KLM side to a total of 56 runs in 16 over’s.The continuous rain didn’t stop the game but made it very slow.SCC started their inning very slow. Opening batsmen Jai and Ravi played sensibly and scored 7 & 3 runs respectively, with a partnership of 12 runs on the board. SCC lost some quick wickets, Rathnakar out for a duck, Senthil played a couple of good shots but got caught out at square wicket, Agam contrary to normal practise was bowled quite soon, but his overall contribution to the team was excellent. Agni as usual was the in form batsman for SCC. He played some good cricketing shots and scored 14 runs. Sulabh who had come in on number 4, played a sensible unbeaten inning. He played the anchor role for the SCC innings and scored 8 runs with AK at the end. The shorthanded Fokker\KLM opponents bowled and fielded very well and gave SCC a real run for their money. In the end SCC managed to reach the required target of 57 runs. The joy of SCC's first ever two consecutive wins, was a little overshadowed by the fact that the Fokker\KLM team was severely handicapped by being so shorthanded. We are grateful to HBS to accommodate us at such short notice. Specially the Secretary of the Cricket Board, Mz. Marieke Hommels, who kindly hosted the third innings. All were pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of the catering which was performed by Kashmir from the Javastraat. The third innings too was played in the spirit of the game and an extremely pleasant affair. It is good to have an "own" home to play our matches in future.Marius, Julian and David send their compiments and congratulations from their holiday address.

Important dates, august 2008
The good news is that in future SCC shall host it's home games at HBS! 5th August, 18:00, HBS ground against Fokker\KLM combination14th August, 18:00, HBS ground against Nc3A19th August, 18:00, VCC ground against EPO9th August, 15:00, Quick ground TRAINING SESSION.Please inform Vice Captain Sanket Thorat if you are unable to attend.

SCC surprises with a win over Optiver
The summer holiday season has it downsides. Cricket captains, when not on holiday themselves, have great difficulty getting a team together. Optiver’s Rashid, had to miss 5 players today, while SCC’s Vice Captain, Sanket (who does most of the work when Captain Sandy is busy, and he always is;-), had to find adequate replacement for Mukul and Vinneeth and as always succeeded. As you know we play our home matches at KZ. Where the canteen is staffed by volunteers. I was informed yesterday that the match of the 5th of August needs to be cancelled and that the match of the 14th needed to be postponed for a week. Unfortunately postponement is not an option due to the fact that we already have a match on the 19th and it is just impossible to synchronise approx 25 diaries at such short notice. I have thrown myself at the mercy of the secretary of HBS cricket, Marieke Hommels and am pretty confident that Marieke shall find a solution. I’ll keep you all posted.Chances for the match to go ahead looked bleak yesterday morning; spells of rain and drizzle lasted well into the afternoon. Fortunately the weather improved substantially and at 18:30 hrs the small but lovely KZ ground was basking in an almost hot, evening sun. Hot enough for some our SCC supporters to seek the coolness of the shade and use an umbrella. This reminded me of what my grandmother used to say in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia where the locals had a saying “Only Dutchmen and idiots sit in the sun!”, the equivalent of “Only Englishmen and mad dogs bask themselves in the sun”, which is used by some good people in India, I heard yesterday;-)A little later than planned, our opponents Optiver arrived with 8 players. Two volunteers were appointed to give them a hand fielding. The captains agreed to reduce the number of overs to 16 each. Sandy won the toss and opted to bat. Our opening pair Agni and Sanket, both did extremely well and retired not out with 26 runs. Top score! Agam did not want to lag behind and also retired not out with the same score. With a score of 105 after 10 overs, the seasons top score was in sight. It was not to be! Optiver stepped up their bowling and Narish, AK, Sandy and Marius managed to add another 28 to the total of 133.It just was not to be for Optiver. Two of their 8 man team were injured during the match. Arshid, took a deflected ball right on the bridge of nose after dropping Sanket of an ambitious shot. He was bleeding profusely, but fortunately did not suffer major injury.Agam and Sanket each bowled the maximum 4 overs and created havoc in the Optiver batting order. One particularly interesting moment was the time that Sanket had collected the ball on mid-off and made it to the wicket at the bowlers end, while the batsman was still half way the wicket. Sanket pretended to flick the bails off, but did not in order to prolong the match. It must be said that there excellent fielding performances to be seen, specially by Narish, Jai, Ratnaker, Srinavas, Senthil and Thomas. The youngest ever sub, in the history of SCC. Mark, my words, you’ll hear from him in the future;-) Optiver’s captain Rashid, graciously declared in time for the first part of the third 3rd innings to be able to take place within the time limited granted us by the lady that runs the KZ club house. We were lucky this evening to have had the club house staffed by a lovely young lady, who co-operated in every way, even offering her car to complete strangers to bring a hurt player to the hospital.A few minutes after the scheduled time, the company left for the 2nd part of the third inning to Kashmir in the Javastraat, our favourite restaurant, where we are made welcome at all hours, even at the shortest of notices. The meal was as we by now expect from our hosts. Excellent. Also in the opinion of our Optiver guests. Rashid, a connoisseur of Indian food, says there is not a single restaurant in Amsterdam, that matches the quality Kashmir offers. Himself being Kashmiri, quite a complement! Also present during the match was a lady who Sandy described to me as ‘the inimitable Esther’. Esther has taken a lot of snaps on and of the field, and has been so kind to send me a number of pictures. Please enjoy with the compliments of Esther Teuwens:

SCC - Optiver, 28th July 2008 photo's by Esther Teuwens. The third innings lasted till after mid night. A bit on the late side for those who had to be on their toes at 8:00 am and still had to travel back to Amsterdam. On the whole, not bad at all, an evening like this. A nice game of cricket, no serious injuries, a pleasant dinner with tasty food and good company.

ING easily overtakes SCC and wins by nine wickets!
It was a sunny and nice evening on the cosy 2nd ground at VRA. ING won the toss and elected to field. Quite understandable, SCC is after all a new comer with a rather erratic record. Two wins and three losses. A win against the former champions!Agni and Sanket, regular openers by now, faced an intelligent and precise attack. Sanket soon walked off, after having been caught behind. Agni continued cautiously to have to retire at 25 runs as the match format dictates. Well done Agni!A pleasant surprise was that our captain Sandy also managed to achieve this commendable score. The training session, last Saturday, with Job van Bunge, certainly paid off, at least for Sandy;-). The quality of the bowling was such that our batsmen were so busy defending their wickets, that they just could not set a defendable target. The need to score, caused a number of “unforced errors” and the whole side was dismissed for a mere 86 runs. At no stage during ING’s batting innings, did the batsmen appear in trouble. The opening pair took real advantage of the defensive field setting and dispatched any loose ball on leg side to the boundary. They were not too lazy to run either, cleverly jabbing the ball for singles whenever they could. Sanket bowled the number two batsman and was let down by the field when the number three, the hard hitting bowler, was dropped after just a few balls. The number 3, was not out at the end of the match with 24 runs on the board. The old saying “catches win matches”, would probably not have applied in this game, but at least three were not taken.

Anyway, the ING batsmen confidently reached the target, for a 9 wicket win with 6 overs to spare. The game was played in the best spirit of the game and we thank the ING team for the lesson, the pleasant reception and third innings. Knowing that the alarm clock starts ringing at 5:00 for some of us, we reluctantly had to leave the wonderful VRA setting. It is not a disgrace to loose a match against a team of ING’s calibre. But it is clear that a number areas of our game need desperate improvement. We have the technical ability and skill, but the lack of practise is taking its toll. So please ALL be present at the next session on the 26th of July 2008, at the Quick Hague ground, 16:00 hrs SHARP.The good news: the match against EPO has been rescheduled it shall be played on Tuesday, the 19th of August 2008, at VCC. Please inform VC, Sanket, if you are not available. Before the game, a refreshment at the Bosbaan in Amsterdam.

Eureka wins and ends SCC's winning streak;-)
In the penultimate over, Eureka reached the 137 target SCC had set them. Unfortunately, I was just able to see the final two balls, because I had a match elsewhere, which I wanted to attend. The score sheet showed that there were good all round performances by Agni and Senthil, excellent bowling figures too Senthil and not surpsingly by the new chaps on the block Agem and Mukul.Driving Vineet, Agem and Mokul to the station, to take trains to Eindhoven and Hilversum, respectively; just to illustrate how keen these gentlemen are in taking part, I heard a number of things worth mentioning.First of all Naris took a spectacular catch! There was also a discussion about the fact that bowlers are offered advice by 5 or 6 players simultaneously and that the fielding positions are changed quite frequently. I know that no harm is intended, but this must change. Days are getting shorter and it is necessary to get your overs bowled as soon as possible. Field settings, should be known for each situation and positions should be changed as little as possible during an over. In the ideal situation the 20 overs should be bowled in less than 1 hour, but they should not take longer than 80 minutes.I know we Dutch are a funny lot. We like to do things our own way and are always ready to deviate and make our own interpretations, but not in cricket. For cricket "proper", as I call it, the 42 Laws apply. For limited overs cricket, special rules are applied, which might differ considerably from the original law.In de "bedrijfscompetitie" which SCC takes part in, I was told by senior umpire Norman Langdon, the wide rules as in Senior KNCB cricket, do not apply. Umpires should be more lenient, specially for balls on the leg side. Here only balls passing behind the batsman's pads should be considered wide. (The batsman of course should be standing in a normal batting position;-) To be absolutely sure that there is no misunderstanding umpires should confer before the match, how o.a. wides are to be judicated. The gentleman who explained that balls pitched outside leg stump are always wide unless hit by the bat, is mistaken. A wide should never be called if the ball touches any part of the batsman's person or equipment. I am sure no harm was intended, but hopefully someone shall point this out to him, so that he'll correct his ways. Good on you SCC umpires that you were not tempted to use his way of judging wides on leg side. Two wrongs, don't make a right;-)The good fielding performances by Vineet,Ramarao, Sulabh, Srinivas and Jai could not prevent us from losing the game. Hard Luck!Is it? Or could lack of practice be a major factor. Let's find out! There is a session planned with Job van Bunge, of http://www.cricketschool.nl/, on 12th July 2008, at 16:00 hours on the Quick Haag, ground. Please all attend, after the session, we shall discuss the plans for the rest of the year.We also need a permanent scorer. Please visit: PitchPad to download the latest free version. Spread the word to your cricketing friends, it is fantastic and absolutely FREE!

SCC beats BHPB by 3 wickets, possibly the biggest upset of the season!
It is no mean feat for Sanket to put a team together. Most of us, are expats, who find cricket a pleasant diversion from daily life, which is governed by the need to perform excellently at the high standard set by our company. To the benefit of all concerned, our company’s clients, our company and last, but not least, ourselves;-)Production issues, important conferences, seminars, injuries, home leave and even posting to other locations, hamper him and captain Sandy, in putting together the strongest possible side. With Veneeth, Naresh, Mahesh, Marius and Kumar, not being able to attend yesterday’s game, Sanketh barely managed to get eleven to man the squad. Fortunately, AK, Senthil, Thijs, Mukul and Agam were able to take part and each, contributed to his own right in the surprising outcome of the second match against BHPB.SCC, had found itself on the wrong end of the stick, when it was thrashed in the first confrontation, reported earlier in this same blog. BHPB’s captain, Big John Sist, who had played a dominating role in dishing out the thrashing, had given himself an evening off and did not participate, this time. Which was a pity, for John is an asset in all 3 innings to the game.BHPB won the toss and elected to bat. Their opener went retired not out at 25 runs, but right from the start, it was clear to everybody that this was a totally different game than the first one. This time, the SCC bowlers, AK, Senthil, Agni, Mukul, managed to contain the BHPB batsmen to a respectful 123. A reasonable target, in comparison to the 180 plus, during the first match. Newcomers Mukul and Agam, both established themselves as assets to the team, not only for their abilities on the field, but specially for their participation in the 3rd innings. AK, who made an excellent contribution bowling, was extremely pleased with one of his wickets. During a particular over, he had the batsman in all sorts of trouble, the ball hitting his pads, every other ball. Strong appeals for the first two interceptions with the pad, did not deliver the desired result. Nor did the strong appeal for the third, but to AK’s relief and joy, the umpires finger went up, just as the loud appeal was dying down!To SCC, the figures show, 124 runs were a jaunting target. Never before had it managed to make that many runs in a 20/20 match. Openers Agni and Sanket, illustrated how playing regularly in the Dutch competition with HBS, has improved their game. Both went retired not out exceeding the maximum 25 runs limits, by 2 and 1 run respectively. Not for a moment did BHPB seem to take the initiative, although both Thijs and Senthil’s innings ended with unfortunate run outs. AK and Mokul made useful contributions to the score. Opa Paul’s Man of the Match, Agam, illustrated how excellent an all rounder he is when he slogged BHPB’s opening bowler for 6, as if it was the easiest thing to do. It must be said that all of SCC was relieved and elated with this victory. BHPB, proofed to be as good and sporting losers as they are winners and provided a most enjoyable third Innings. Hopefully, we can play BHPB again this season, in a friendly decider. Due to a misunderstanding, Opa Paul failed to provide the Indian meal, he had promised Big John, but next time better. Unfortunately, none of the BHPB players could make it to Kashmir, where the memorable victory was celebrated till after midnight.Well done chaps, keep up the good work. Next week, on the 2nd of July, same place, same time, different opponent: EUREKA!Unfortunately, no one was present to take photo's of this event. SCC still has no scorer and scorebook! Volunteer required!

BHPB thrashes SCC and wins by 107 runs
The decision to go ahead with the game was not taken until late in the afternoon. It had rained for most of the morning, but www.buienrader.nl indicated that there would be a dry spell at the time the game was scheduled.Fortunately a little longer as well. As usual we were late. So far, that is the only negative observation I have made with regard to the SCC players, they just can’t grasp the importance of adhering to CET, rather than Indian Standard Time. “Make hay while the sun shines!”. Play while it is still light. Start as early as possible. Bowl your overs as quickly as possible. While on bat, don’t hold long tactical deliberations after every ball with the non-striker. Keep the game flowing.Having been given the toss bij John Sist, the BHPB captain, Sandy elected to field. BHPB having seen that SCC had given Estec good opposition and beaten De Witte, had no other option than to set SCC a reasonable target. The opening batsmen in true twenty20 fashion, immediately started slogging. Our poor bowlers were being slaughtered. In no time nr 2 bat, had reached his maximum score of 25. The opener soon followed with the same result. In order to save as much time as possible, John Sist, had proposed to only bowl from one end. The bowlers were bowling with the wind all the time, but some of ours had difficulty with the dampness of some of the surface of the artificial pitch.Fortunately, we did manage to take some wickets. Less than could have been taken, as a result of a few dropped catches and missed run out opportunities. We need to put in some practise there. After 30 overs, BHPB had set us a target of 163 to win. A formidable task.It must have put too much pressure on our batsmen. Our top order collapsed. BHPB did their utmost to prolong the game. In EBAB style, they rotated their bowlers. Their excellent wicket keeper, on at least three occasions fumbled the ball on purpose to avoid run outs. It was never a match, but it was a lot of fun. BHPB, had won this league, 4 years in a row, before ending 3rd last year to be precise. They have a side consisting of a number of excellent players, backed up by enthusiastic and sporting team mates.Unfortunately not only the SCC batsmen did not perform as expected. Even the umpire performed extremely badly. He not only miscounted an over, thus giving a 7 foot bowler to create havoc, but more importantly gave 3 LBW’s. No wonder the second innings ended with a miserly 55 on the score board. It had become quite cold and windy. Most of the players had become quite thirsty and peckish and were glad to be able to enjoy refreshments and snacks in the clubhouse. Some had to leave earlier than they wanted but duty called. A number kept the third innings alive, until gently requested to leave, because the clubhouse was closing.Fortunately, we are playing BHPB again later in the season, lets put up a better show then!Unfortunately I took the wrong camera with me, so this time just a limited number of pictures. Please: do not forget next training session:31st May, 15:00 hrs CENTRAL EUROPEAN TIME, GMT+1Quick ground. If weather does not permit training outside you'll revert to the HALO Hall.

26th May 2008, Next match
On Monday the 26th May 2008, SCC shall host the match against the 2007 Champions BHP Billiton. The match shall be played at:Sportpark Klein ZwitserlandKlatteweg 113Den HaagFirst ball: 18:30 hrs CET!!!!For those of you working at the Maanweg, it might be a good idea to bring your cricket kit along to the office and change at the Club. To get there in time by public transport:

SCC defeats Cricket Club De Witte by 6 wickets!
The 19th of May 2008, shall be recorded in the history books as the day that the newly formed SCC, booked its first victory! Our host the Cricket Club of the prestigious The Nieuwe of Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte, plays its home matches on the lovely grounds of HCC. A really beautiful setting. For practical purposes, “De Witte” plays all its matches on an “artificial” grass ground. This ground is huge, two adjacent soccer fields with a pitch in the middle. Only hard hits would reach the boundary. An hour prior to the start of the match, threatening clouds, had assembled over The Hague, but fortunately a strong wind drove the clouds away from the cricket ground and when the game started it was sunny and chilly. Our hosts batted first and lost their first two wickets at 16. The rules in this league, state that batsmen retire not out at 25 and the gentlemen Vissra and Koets both reached this excellent target. It must be noted that Mr. Koets had played his last match 15 years ago! Mr. Peters, also had a good knock. Having first gone out for a duck, he was allowed back in and scored a confident 13, before being run out. Most of the dismissed hosts were run out, which either says something about our fielding or their running or a bit of both;-)Last Saturday, the weather had forced our coach Job to revert to an indoor training while he had planned batting and fielding practise outside. It was more than fortunate that he managed to do so at such short notice, for we surely should have lost, had this training session not taken place. Anyway, we dropped 6 catches. Some extremely difficult ones. The saying goes “Catches, win Matches”! De Witte, collected 102 runs of their 20 overs. Our most efficient bowler was Vineet, conceding only 18 runs of his 5 overs. Agni followed closely with 20 of the same number of overs. Our opening bats Agni and Naresh, both played a splendid innings, both retiring at the maximum score of 25. Naresh, at one stage fell while taking a run and lay prostrated, flat faced on the ground, as the ball rolled to short mid wicket. Seeing this, he valiantly dashed to his crease, barely making it in time. Hilarious! Our run rate was equal to that of our hosts; there was a match on!Vineet, who had bowled so well, played a commendable innings and quite rightly was eying our umpire, for being too lenient on wides. Just prior to this over, one of our hosts, had requested him to ask some of our boys who were blocking the view of the score board to move. 97 runs after 17 overs it read. The umpire, who last played cricket when the majority of the SCC side had not been born, shares the view of his slightly older colleague Norman Longdon, with whom he had stood against Estec, that in the judication of wides in this league, specially those on the leg side, the bowlers ability should be taken into consideration. The bowler was working hard and bowling to the best of his ability and the batsman was going for the ball and missing it, well within reach: not a wide was his reasoning. The same batsman, by the way, who had prevented a number of wides from being scored by dispatching balls, which had landed outside the pitch, to on and off side. But the rule in normal Dutch Limited overs, does not take the batsman into account. A ball that misses the stumps outside leg stump is wide! The umpire got the fright of his life when in the next over with 4 balls to go and a score of 99 on the board, a wicket was taken by John Fullard, an old hand, but still an excellent and accurate medium pacer. The umpire heard some member of the opponents urge his bowler to continue in this fashion, there were just 4 balls to go. He glanced at the score board which still read 17 overs, it had not been updated.Next man in was Marius. Taking the place of Thijs vd K, who had pulled a muscle while sprinting to get to a ball which had been hit in the air while we were fielding. Hard luck Thijs, get well soon and I am sure you’ll get a chance to hit a couple of sixes. One is never too old to learn, you have the build of a menacing fast bowler and Job and Sjoerd, could surely give you some pointers, if you are that way inclined. Marius, who had amused as all, in his first ever match, when he was bowled by a full toss. It must have been obvious to the opposition that Marius lacks batting experience for they all moved in. John Fullard, ran up in determination and bowled at good pace right at middle stump, Marius did not blink an eye and clipped it firmly to the off side and ran 2. The next ball, was bowled similarly, took an edge and allowed the batsmen to complete the winning runs. What happened next, is highly irregular in Dutch cricket, elated visitors swarming the field, cheering their team mates and clapping them on their backs. Our hosts, took it graciously in good sporting spirit and took no offence. No offence was meant; but in “Rome do as the Romans”, wait for the batsmen to step out of the field, give them a hand show your appreciation by giving them a hand, do the same for the fielding side. Words of encouragement and sympathy are also acceptable; then shake hands and thank you opponent for the game. Our hosts offered us ample refreshments and “broodjes” and after the third innings, we collectively went to Kashmir. That Indian restaurant in the Javastraat in The Hague, where the proprietor was willing to accommodate us even at this late hour (22:30 hrs) and served a buffet meal, which was quite agreeable to our pallets, as usual one might remark! The meal ended just after midnight. Cricket is a team effort and you were all men of the match. Specially those of you who did not get a game, but made yourself useful as scorer, spectator or even batsman and fielder with the opposition. But in this game a “Man of the Match” was appointed by Paul at the request of our Captain Sandy. He gladly awarded the honour to Agni Nagaraj for his general conduct, as player and umpire. Bowling very well and batting an excellent Innings.I conclude by determining that although it was a win by 6 wickets, in fact it was an extremely close game. An enjoyable one at that. We thank our hosts for their sportsmanship and hospitality and should eagerly reciprocate!

ESTEC teaches newcomer SCC a lesson!
Later than planned, some of the kit had arrived and Opa Paul turned up later than intended, our squad arrived at the Ajax grounds in Oegstgeest, where our hosts and first opponents in the league play their home games. We started to bat and it immediately became obvious that we are in desperate need of some batting practice. Just joking;-)With valiant efforts of AK, Agni and the rest of the team, we managed to scrape together the impressive total of 81 runs. Quite good, considering that ESTEC was so kind to allow to of our batsmen to come back in for another try, after having gone out for a duck the first time. The game was played in the best spirit of the game. At almost 43 years of age, Marius played his first official cricket match. He totally misjudged a full toss. He stood there making no attempt to play the ball as it landed on middle stump! The fielding side took pity on him and did not appeal, while the excellent umpire at the bowlers end, with great sense of humour, called a No Ball. To the delight of the crowd, Marius and his fellow batsman then illustrated how important communication between batsmen is, as Marius was run out.Good bowling by AK, Senthill, Sanket and Agni, could not prevent us from losing our first game. Nevertheless, it was an extremely pleasant experience. Our hosts presented us lavishly with refreshments and snacks for our first 3rd Innings. If this kind of hospitality is representative for the league, we are all in for a great time and a wonderful cricket season.Since both ESTEC and us, have no game planned on the 27 July 2008, we intend to invite them to play us again so that we can reciprocate at our home ground. I’ll keep you informed, when we have formal confirmation from Andy. The evening ended later than planned, because we evaluated our performance at Kashmir in the Javastraat, where the salted lassi flowed generously.
